How to convert

  1. 1. Add a square PNG

    A logo with transparency is the right input. A JPG or a WebP also works, but a JPG has no see-through pixels to keep. A wide picture is fitted inside each square and centered.

  2. 2. Leave ICO selected and check the sizes

    ICO is the only output, shown above the drop area. 16 and 32 cover browser tabs. 48 covers many shortcuts. Turn on 256 only if you want the large Windows icon. One size always stays checked.

  3. 3. Download the ICO

    The file ends in .ico and contains a PNG for each size you checked. Put favicon.ico next to your pages, or point a link tag at it. This page does not edit your site.

Questions

Why not just rename a PNG to .ico?

Browsers sometimes accept a PNG favicon, and sometimes they do not. An ICO is a small directory of sizes. This page writes that directory, with a real PNG inside each entry.

Will a tiny source look sharp at 256?

No. A 32 pixel logo scaled up to 256 looks soft. Start from a PNG at least as large as the biggest size you check. SVG to PNG can draw a sharp 512 pixel PNG first.

Does the ICO keep transparency?

Yes. Each size is a PNG with the original see-through pixels, padded with transparency so the icon is square.

Is the logo uploaded?

No. The ICO is packed in this browser. Nothing is posted.
