Resize an Image for a Passport Photo

Free, with no daily limit. Max width and height are already 600 pixels. That is a 2 by 2 inch photo at 300 dots per inch. The longer side scales down to fit. This page does not crop a face, and it does not promise a government will accept the file.

Or paste a picture. The file is not uploaded. On an iPhone, Choose photos may hand you a JPEG instead of the original HEIC. This page accepts that too.

Used for JPG and WebP. PNG does not use this slider. 85 is the starting point.

Each file is fitted on its own. JPG and WebP try a lower quality first. PNG is made smaller, because it has no quality step.

JPG and PNG can keep camera details. WebP cannot keep the original details. The picture is saved right-side up.

How to convert

  1. 1. Add the photo

JPG, PNG, WebP, or an iPhone HEIC. The output format is already JPG, which is what most photo forms ask for.

  2. 2. Leave the 600 pixel box, or type the form's numbers

A wide photo stays wide. A tall photo stays tall. Nothing is cut into a square. If the form wants 413 by 531, type those max edges instead.

  3. 3. Check the file size next

This page changes pixels, not a kilobyte cap. If the form also says under 200 KB or 100 KB, use those pages after this one.

Questions

Is 600 by 600 the official passport size?

It is the usual digital size for a US 2 by 2 inch photo at 300 dpi. Many other countries want 35 by 45 millimetres, about 413 by 531 pixels at the same density. Fitting inside 600 covers that longer side. Read the form you are filling in.

Will this crop the photo to a square and center my face?

No. It only scales so both edges are at most 600 pixels. A government photo also cares about the background, the head size, and the crop. This page does not check any of that.

The portal says the file must be under 200 KB.

Resize here first if the pixels are the problem, then use Compress a JPG to 200 KB. A 600 pixel JPG is often already under that cap.

Does the photo get uploaded to resize it?

No. Scaling happens on this device. Location data is removed unless you choose Keep.
