Resize an Image for Instagram

Free, with no daily limit. The box is already 1080 by 1350 pixels, the tall size Instagram uses for a feed post. The picture scales to fit inside that box. It is not cropped.

Or paste a picture. The file is not uploaded. On an iPhone, Choose photos may hand you a JPEG instead of the original HEIC. This page accepts that too.

Each file is fitted on its own. JPG and WebP try a lower quality first. PNG is made smaller, because it has no quality step.

How to convert

  1. 1. Add the pictures

JPG, PNG, or WebP. The output is already JPG, which Instagram accepts.

  2. 2. Keep 1080 by 1350, or switch to a square

A landscape photo becomes at most 1080 pixels wide. A tall photo becomes at most 1350 pixels tall. For a square post, set both edges to 1080. This still does not crop.

  3. 3. Download

One picture downloads as a JPG. Several download as a ZIP. Stories are 1080 by 1920, which is taller than this box. Type 1080 and 1920 if you are resizing for a story.

Questions

Why 1080 by 1350?

That is the portrait feed size Instagram documents: 1080 pixels wide and 1350 tall. Square posts are 1080 by 1080. Landscape feed posts are shorter. Fitting inside 1080 by 1350 keeps a feed post inside the largest of those boxes.

Does this crop to the Instagram frame?

No. It only scales down. A wide photo stays wide. Crop in the app you already use if you need a cut.

Will Instagram recompress the JPG anyway?

Yes. Instagram encodes uploads again. Starting from a 1080-wide JPG avoids sending a huge original. Quality 85 is the start on this page.

Is the picture uploaded to resize it?

No. The resize runs in this browser. Instagram is where the file goes only if you upload it yourself later.
