How a WebP becomes a GIF here

A still WebP is decoded like any other picture on this site, then written as one GIF frame. An animated WebP is read by the browser's image decoder, one frame at a time, so the tab does not hold every frame at full size. The GIF encoder is a separate MIT-licensed file from this site. It is fetched only when the output is a GIF, not on the first paint of the page. The file that downloads is a GIF. Nothing is posted to a conversion API.

Color, transparency, and what GIF cannot be

A GIF has at most 256 colors, so a photo can band. WebP to JPG and WebP to PNG are the still-image pages. Transparency is one bit: pixels below about half opacity become clear, and a soft edge snaps. Frame delays follow the WebP, with a floor of about 20 milliseconds, and the GIF loops. More than 240 frames is refused. A file over 160 MB on a phone, or over 400 MB on a computer, is stopped. This is not a video. GIF to PNG keeps a single frame if you need to edit one. PNG to WebP is the other direction for a still PNG.

How to convert

    GIF is the only output. Quality changes how many colors the GIF keeps. 85 is the start, which is 128 colors. 90 and above uses 256.

Questions

Does an animated WebP stay animated?

Yes. The browser reads the frames one at a time and this page writes them into a GIF. A still WebP is a one-frame GIF. This is not a video file.

Are the files uploaded?

No. The first conversion loads the converter from this site. A GIF also loads a small encoder from this site, and only when the output is a GIF. That download is the encoder, not your picture. After those files have arrived, you can go offline and keep converting in this tab.

Why does a photo look banded?

A GIF holds at most 256 colors. Photos band. Use WebP to JPG or WebP to PNG for a still photo. GIF is the right file when you need frames or a format that old software still accepts.

What happens to soft transparent edges?

GIF transparency is one bit. A pixel is clear or it is not. This page treats alpha below about 128 as clear, so a soft shadow snaps to a hard edge. WebP to PNG keeps the soft edge.

Will the timing match the WebP?

Delays come from the WebP and are stored in hundredths of a second. A frame shorter than about 20 milliseconds is raised to that floor, because GIF timing is coarse. The GIF loops.

Is there a frame limit?

Yes. This page stops at 240 frames so the tab stays open. A very large frame is refused before it is decoded, or scaled down when many frames share the memory ceiling. A file over 160 MB on a phone, or over 400 MB on a computer, is stopped with an error.

Does the GIF keep the WebP's metadata?

No. GIF output does not copy EXIF, GPS, or a color profile. The pixels and the frame timing are what this page keeps.

Can I turn a GIF back into a still picture?

Yes. GIF to JPG and GIF to PNG keep the first frame only. They do not rebuild the animation.
